In the last couple months of high school I was struggling to decide what I wanted to do, go back to school in the fall or wait. I was accepted into programs I had applied for, and I was beyond excited but I was so unsure of what I wanted to do with my career. It took many discussions, some soul searching and after hours, and days of stressing I decided to not go back to school... at least not right away.
That was nearly a year ago, Since that time I have been working full time in office settings located in downtown Calgary. I started out doing reception at a hair salon, then moved to an engineering firm, now I am working as an executive assistant. Working in a corporate environment for the past year has taught me a lot of things about how life is outside of high school, and about things that I never expected to learn. The "real world" as most people refer to it as, is so different from what I expected it to be like.
Working in a corporate setting has blown me away in so many different aspects. I imagined it as something it is not, and that is both positive and negative.
Think of the watering hole in Mean Girls..... Cady thinks that high school reminds her of that, well so does the corporate world but instead of water, its money.
I never would have guessed that people would be so nice. I'm not talking about everyone I have ever met, but most people are just generally very courteous and kind. Like any aspect of life you have those people that just suck... but, for the most part the positives out weigh the negatives and I have been introduced to some of the nicest people. I didn't think it was going to be like that.
But on that note of social interactions, those cliques, rude men, and jealous girls that you think go away after high school, they don't. They grow up and go to university and now you find your self working with the types of people you hated in high school except, unlike high school, professionalism dictates and prevents nasty behavior to some extent.
I have learned so much working right out of high school on a professional level, I never thought that I would be able to gain the type of experience I have now by working full-time in an office. I have gained considerable knowledge and I am qualified and have skills that I wouldn't have gained from attending university.
The corporate world has taught me routine, stability, and has given me so much experience. Most of all, it has shown me that there are more good people than bad people out in the world and to me that is beyond refreshing and makes me excited to continue to work in the corporate world.
