Is fortune real?

Last night, I went out for dinner with my roommate to P.F. Changs.
We had a good time talking and eating- the two most important things for us.
I ordered Kung Pao Chicken, and she got Oolong chilean Sea bass.
(Honestly, the food was just okay- I've had better!)

With the check, we got these different fortune cookies they had made for their Valentine's special.
I never eat fortune cookies, but my roommate thought they tasted better than the usual ones.

I opened mine, and it said,
"Your heart of gold will soon help a friend in need."

This fortune left me in mixed feelings.
I do like to help my friends, I have always done so.
But lately I have been feeling I do that a lot, but don't get much in return.
So, this fortune doesn't make me feel so good.

Maybe helping others has nothing to do with happiness.
Maybe it just is how my life is.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

  1. I'm not a huge fan of PF Chang's either. For the price their food could, and should, be way better.

I don't know if I quite agree with the RWE quote. I think if you're happy, doing whatever it is you're doing, you'll be much more likely to WANT to help people. There's nothing wrong with feeling like you give a lot and not getting a lot back in return. Sometimes people aren't aware that you feel that way. Sometimes other people are just selfish. My (ex) best friend & I are no longer friends because she only wanted to hang out when it was convenient for her. The relationship between friends especially should be one that is reciprocal.

    1. Yes, I agree. I have been seeing the lack of reciprocation in friendships lately- so it kinda makes me want to just be selfish. But, knowing me, I would probably still be the first one to help out any friend in need. And I don't mind helping. It's just the lack of balance that bothers me.

  2. It is but human to want to be reciprocated for any good that we do. I agree, keeping good balance and a sanity check is all we need :)
Love the way you captured that gorgeous cookie btw. Nice photography.

A day in San Francisco — Memorial Day

If you have followed my blog for sometime, you probably know about my big move across coast. It's been a few months being a Cali resident, but I haven't gotten out as much as I would have liked.  Maybe once we move to a place, it kinda loses the tourist charm that it has when we visit for a weekend. Don't you think? I decided to make this right and this Memorial Day weekend, I spent my first Touristy day in San Francisco. Like anything else, I made a long list of places to see, and spread it across three days based on distance proximity. Yes, it was a whole weekend plan but life get in way and hence it ended up being just a day trip. The day started with a little detour at Bay Trail, near Shoreline Park, followed by a quick brunch at Crepe Vine and a beautiful long drive to the city. The Painting Ladies at Alamo Square was our first stop. These are basically just houses with a Victorian architecture and painted with three or more colors. The whole area l

What if ... ?

What if — an agonizing feeling that no one is spared from.  We all find ourselves in situations where we look back and think about things we  have done, things we should have done, things we should not have done, or things we should have done differently. They are not necessarily regrets, but more of questioning and second-guessing the choices we have made. I for one get this feeling a lot, and I find myself thinking about how life could have been if my choices would have been different.  What if I studied harder in school:   I would have gotten into a better college with more opportunities, which means better job and satisfaction. But, who can guarantee that would have happened- so I'd rather be happy about the other things I did and not just study all the time. What if I stayed at my old job:  I would have gotten to be roommates with my best friend for a much longer time, and would have definitely enjoyed more and I wouldn’t be stressed because of studying, assi
